Henry W. Klein
Henry Walter (H.W.) Klein (1919–2012) was a Danish-Norwegian designer associated with mid-century modern furniture, known for his refined seating and storage designs produced during the 1950s and 1960s.
Biography
Born in Norway, Klein initially trained as a cabinetmaker before continuing his education at Frederiksberg Technical School in Denmark, where he studied during a period when Finn Juhl was a leading figure. This background placed him within the core development of Danish modern design.
Klein worked across both furniture and interior design, eventually establishing his own practice. He later became closely associated with the Danish manufacturer Bramin, for whom he designed a range of furniture, particularly sofas and lounge seating characterized by clean lines and careful proportions.
His work reflects a balance between Scandinavian craftsmanship and more industrial methods of production, often combining functionality with a restrained, architectural clarity. Klein also explored new materials and production techniques, contributing to the broader evolution of modern furniture design during the postwar period.
His designs remain appreciated for their understated elegance, material sensitivity, and consistent focus on comfort and usability.
