Holger Johansson wall lamps

Wall lamps designed by Holger Johansson and produced by Westal in Bankeryd, Sweden, in the 1960s. The lamp is constructed in brass with two spherical glass shades. The brass structure is composed of a vertical rectangular wall bracket from which two horizontal arms project, each carrying a straight upright stem that supports a globe-shaped shade. The globes are executed in clear, slightly smoke-tinted glass with characteristic small air bubbles in the mass, giving a textured surface and a lively light distribution when lit.

The color palette is dominated by the warm golden tone of the brass, combined with the soft grey–amber hue of the glass. The overall geometry is strictly orthogonal in the metal parts, contrasted by the perfectly round spheres of the shades. This balance between linear elements and circular forms is typical of Scandinavian modern lighting of the 1960s, where simple volumes and clear constructions were emphasised.

Holger Johansson was a Swedish lighting designer closely associated with Westal and known for functional yet refined luminaires for domestic and public interiors. Westal, founded in Bankeryd, Sweden, specialised in high-quality metal and glass lighting and became an important producer of Scandinavian modern fixtures during the mid-20th century. Their products were engineered for durability and ease of maintenance, with an emphasis on simple forms and honest materials.

The lamp is in excellent vintage condition with small signs of usage. The brass shows minor surface marks and a light, even patina consistent with age and material, while the glass shades are clear with only minimal wear.

Approximate dimensions are 47 cm in height, 23.5 cm in depth and 45 cm in width, corresponding to about 18.5 inches high, 9.25 inches deep and 17.7 inches wide.
