Ib Hylander daybed
This rare daybed, bench, or bed was designed by Danish architect Ib Hylander and produced by Søren Horn in Denmark in 1956. Reflecting the mid-century Scandinavian ethos of clarity and functionality, this piece showcases an elegant interplay of refined craftsmanship and geometric precision.
The construction features a solid teak frame with elegantly tapered legs and softened edges, a hallmark of Danish modern design. The platform surface is composed of solid ash slats, meticulously aligned and secured with exposed brass fasteners. These brass accents lend a subtle decorative contrast while highlighting the construction technique. The central section of the piece is extendable via a sliding mechanism, allowing it to transform into a larger platform. This versatile feature makes it usable as a daybed, sleeping surface, or display bench, epitomizing the era’s focus on multi-functionality and spatial efficiency.
The teak frame has aged to a deep, rich patina, while the ash slats maintain a lighter tone, offering a striking two-tone materiality. The joinery and brass accents remain in excellent condition, consistent with the high standards of mid-century Danish cabinetmaking. The piece is well-preserved with only minor surface marks, typical of age and use, maintaining its integrity and charm.
This design exemplifies the practicality and beauty of Scandinavian modern furniture, emphasizing both functional versatility and timeless aesthetic appeal.
