Ib Kofod-Larsen easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs was designed in 1953 by Danish designer Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by the cabinetmaker Christensen & Larsen. Each chair is crafted from teak and oak, combining the strength and warmth of these hardwoods with the sculptural elegance of mid-century Danish design. The seat and backrest are formed from moulded teak plywood with softly curved edges, offering a refined organic profile. The arm-like extensions of the backrest subtly embrace the sitter, while the splayed oak legs and structural stretchers provide both stability and visual lightness.
Ib Kofod-Larsen was one of Denmark’s most prolific designers of the mid-20th century, known for his mastery of form, proportion, and comfort. Trained as an architect at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Kofod-Larsen created designs that balanced sculptural presence with a human-centered approach to seating. His work was often produced by leading cabinetmakers in limited numbers before reaching a wider audience through larger-scale manufacturers, and his pieces remain sought after for their craftsmanship and timeless appeal.
Christensen & Larsen, active during Denmark’s golden age of cabinetmaking, were known for their high-quality, workshop-level production, working with leading designers to create furniture that fused traditional joinery with modernist aesthetics. The combination of teak and oak in these chairs reflects both material harmony and a nuanced use of wood tones, enhancing their sculptural form.
The pair is in excellent condition, with well-preserved surfaces that display the fine grain patterns of the teak and oak. The rich warm hue of the wood is consistent, with only minimal signs of age and use, ensuring the original integrity of the design is retained.
