Ib Kofod-Larsen easy chairs
This very rare pair of wide easy chairs was designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by OPE in Sweden in 1958. The chairs are constructed with solid teak frames combined with generously proportioned upholstered elements, resulting in a design that emphasizes both comfort and sculptural clarity. The silhouette is broad and low, with a slightly reclined backrest and wide armrests that extend forward in a continuous, gently curved line.
The teak frames display a warm medium-brown tone with visible grain patterns, particularly pronounced along the arms, legs, and stretchers. The construction is defined by tapered legs and angled supports that give the chairs a light visual presence despite their substantial width. The upholstery is executed in leather, newly fully restored and reupholstered, in a cognac-brown tone that complements the teak. The leather surfaces are smooth with subtle natural variation, and the stitching follows the contours of the cushions and armrests with a restrained, precise finish.
Ib Kofod-Larsen was known for his refined approach to seating design, where organic lines, ergonomic consideration, and high-quality materials were carefully balanced. His work from the late 1950s often explored wider, more relaxed seating forms, intended for modern domestic interiors. The collaboration with OPE resulted in a number of technically accomplished pieces, characterized by solid craftsmanship and a clear Scandinavian modernist identity.
Stylistically, the chairs belong to mid-century Scandinavian modernism, combining functional comfort with an emphasis on material honesty and elegant proportions. The wide seat, supportive backrest, and integrated armrests create a relaxed seating experience while maintaining a disciplined and architectural form.
The pair is in excellent condition, with the teak frames well preserved and the leather upholstery recently restored. Minor signs of usage remain, consistent with careful handling and age, without affecting the overall presentation.
Dimensions are 93.5 × 76 × 73 cm, corresponding to approximately 36.8 × 29.9 × 28.7 inches. The seat height is 42 cm, approximately 16.5 inches.
