Illum Wikkelsø easy chair
This rare easy chair, model 451, was designed by Danish designer Illum Wikkelsø in 1958 and produced by Aarhus Polstermøbelfabrik. The chair features a solid rosewood frame with distinctive grain patterns and a warm reddish-brown tone typical of the wood species. Its design is marked by sharply tapered, sculptural armrests that rise to support the backrest, creating an expressive silhouette that balances structural clarity with organic form.
The seat and backrest are upholstered in original black leather, forming a continuous shell-like shape with angular transitions and ergonomic curves. The leather has developed a soft sheen and patina consistent with careful use and age, indicating very good vintage condition with minimal wear. The junction between the leather upholstery and the wooden frame is both a key visual feature and a demonstration of precise craftsmanship, highlighting the contrast and harmony between materials.
Illum Wikkelsø (1919–1999) was a member of the post-war Danish modernist generation, known for blending functionalism with sculptural refinement. His work often incorporates organic lines and a strong commitment to traditional craftsmanship. Aarhus Polstermøbelfabrik, active during the mid-century era, was recognized for producing small series of high-quality upholstered furniture in collaboration with leading Danish designers.
The chair measures 78 cm wide, 70 cm deep, and 77 cm high, with a seat height of 39 cm—approximately 30.7 inches wide, 27.6 inches deep, 30.3 inches high, and a seat height of 15.4 inches.
