Information

This is a rare pair of model EK easy chairs designed by Danish designer Illum Wikkelsø and produced by Niels Eilersen in Denmark during the 1960s. The design exemplifies the Danish modern ethos of clean lines, functional clarity, and high craftsmanship, particularly in its expressive joinery and restrained material palette.

The frames are constructed from solid teak, displaying a warm reddish-brown tone and a smooth, oiled finish that accentuates the grain pattern. The overall form is architectural, with a low-slung posture and wide stance, underscored by sharply tapered legs and subtly curved armrests that transition fluidly into the rear frame. The armrests feature finger-jointed details at the front corners, emphasizing the precision of cabinetmaking and celebrating exposed joinery as a design feature. The rear structure supports the angled backrest with vertical slats joined to a horizontal crossbar, and discreet brass fittings provide reinforcement at the points of attachment.

The cushions have been recently reupholstered in a soft grey wool fabric with a fine, tight weave that provides a tactile contrast to the teak frame. The seat and back cushions are box-stitched and fitted precisely into the frame, maintaining the chair’s original proportions and preserving its understated elegance. The muted color of the textile complements the rich tone of the wood and lends the chairs a neutral presence suited to a variety of interiors.

Illum Wikkelsø (1919–1999) trained at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts and later worked for Jacob Kjær and Arne Jacobsen before establishing his own studio in 1954. His furniture designs typically reflect organic modernism, focusing on comfort and simplicity while retaining an elegant sculptural form. Niels Eilersen, the producer, is a long-established Danish manufacturer known for high-quality seating and close collaboration with prominent designers of the era.

These chairs are a representative example of Danish modern design at its height—visually light, well-constructed, and thoughtfully proportioned. They embody the ethos of furniture built for both longevity and daily use.

Condition is good vintage, with minor signs of wear on the wooden frames. The upholstery is new and unworn. The Danish Furnituremakers’ Control mark confirms authenticity and production quality in accordance with mid-century Danish standards.
