Ingegerd Silow attrib. carpet
This mid-century Swedish flat weave carpet is attributed to Ingegerd Silow and was produced in Sweden during the 1950s. It is handwoven in wool and features a warm, earthy color palette with tones of beige, brown, ochre, and rust. The composition is organized around a central open field surrounded by a symmetrical floral border pattern. The stylized geometric flowers are typical of Silow’s design language, combining traditional Swedish weaving techniques with modernist abstraction.
The structure of the weave is tight and durable, characteristic of high-quality Swedish rölakan rugs. The surface texture is slightly coarse yet even, providing both visual and tactile depth. The warp ends are finished with short knotted fringes. The carpet remains in good vintage condition, showing only minor wear consistent with age and careful use. The natural wool fibers have developed a soft sheen, enhancing the subtle tonal variation in the color fields.
Ingegerd Silow (1916–2005) was one of Sweden’s most respected textile artists of the 20th century. Trained in Stockholm, she was known for her ability to translate folk-inspired motifs into modern compositions suitable for contemporary interiors. Her work reflects the broader Scandinavian design ethos of the period—functional craftsmanship, natural materials, and harmony of color and form.
This piece exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian textile design, combining geometric clarity with organic rhythm. Its restrained palette and balanced proportions make it adaptable to both modern and traditional interiors.
