Information

This is a flatweave carpet designed by Ingegerd Silow and produced in Sweden during the 1950s. The design reflects a classic Scandinavian mid-century aesthetic, with a strong emphasis on geometric order, natural tonalities, and textile craftsmanship. The primary color is a vivid, grassy green, which serves as a background for the symmetrical arrangement of abstract floral medallions and border motifs in lighter shades of cream, yellow, orange, violet, and olive. These central forms are organized into a structured layout composed of rectangular panels, producing a rhythmic and balanced visual composition.

The technique used is rölakan, a traditional Swedish flatweave method that emphasizes clean lines and hard-wearing, reversible textiles. The wool yarn shows clear evidence of hand-looming, with tight interweaving and slight natural variation, which adds to its artisanal quality. The color palette is distinctive of Silow’s work, combining saturated earth tones with pastel accents to evoke harmony with nature.

Ingegerd Silow (1916–2005) was one of Sweden’s most recognized textile designers, trained at Konstfack and noted for her role in elevating Swedish folk weaving traditions into modern design. Her works often incorporated regional patterns from Skåne and integrated these into more refined and stylized compositions. She collaborated with numerous Swedish weaving workshops and producers, helping to shape the identity of Scandinavian modernism in textile design.

The carpet is in good vintage condition, with light patina and minor signs of use consistent with age. The wool fibers retain their natural sheen and texture, although there is slight softening of some color areas due to wear. The edges remain well preserved, and the weaving is structurally intact.

Dimensions are 204 cm in width and 138 cm in depth, equivalent to approximately 80.3 inches by 54.3 inches. This size and patterning make the carpet suitable both as a functional textile and as a wall-mounted decorative piece, reflecting the versatility of Swedish mid-century weaving.
