Ivar Ålenius Björk vase
This rare Art Deco vase, designed by Ivar Ålenius Björk and produced by Ystad Metall in Sweden during the 1930s, is a striking example of early Scandinavian modernist metalwork. The design is emblematic of the Art Deco movement, incorporating bold geometric elements and a sculptural treatment of form. Comprised of three vertically arranged cylindrical tubes of differing heights, the vase presents a rhythmic and architectural composition. Each tube terminates in a sharply angled diagonal cut, creating a dynamic silhouette that evokes organic references such as stalks or reeds, while remaining resolutely modern in execution.
The cylinders are unified by a circular base, which provides visual and structural balance. The proportions are carefully modulated, with the graduated heights and consistent diameter of the tubes creating a harmonious vertical rhythm. The vase is fabricated in metal and finished in its original yellow lacquer, a vibrant and unconventional choice that accentuates the form’s clean, modernist lines. This vivid finish distinguishes it from the more subdued brass and bronze tones typical of the period, emphasizing its progressive design character.
The surface bears visible signs of age, particularly around the edges and base where the lacquer has worn or oxidized, resulting in a softened, mottled texture. These areas of patination are consistent with the vase’s age and use and contribute to its historical authenticity without compromising structural integrity.
Ivar Ålenius Björk (1905–1978) was a Swedish sculptor and designer noted for his contributions to decorative arts in the early to mid-20th century. His collaborations with Ystad Metall, one of Sweden’s foremost metal producers of the era, yielded a range of brass and lacquered objects including candleholders, vases, and small sculptures. Ystad Metall was known for its high production standards and for engaging leading artists and designers to contribute to its catalog of decorative and utilitarian items. Ålenius Björk’s work for the company is typified by a blend of classical sensibility and modernist abstraction. While his “Lily” candlestick remains his most widely recognized design, this vase represents a rarer and more architectonic exploration of form.
The vase measures 31 cm in height and 8 cm in diameter (approximately 12.2 x 3.1 inches). It remains a notable example of Swedish Art Deco design, distinguished by its sculptural presence, innovative finish, and its place within the broader trajectory of Scandinavian decorative arts.
