Information
Rare Art Deco vase, known as “Rörvasen” designed by Swedish sculptor and designer Ivar Ålenius-Björk and produced by Ystad Metall in Sweden during the 1930s. Made from silver-plated metal, the vase features a sculptural composition of three cylindrical tubes of varying heights, arranged asymmetrically on a circular base. The geometric construction and restrained ornamentation reflect the influence of Art Deco and early Swedish modernism.

The three tubular elements are joined into a single vertical structure, with each tube terminating in a diagonally cut opening. These angled openings create elliptical shapes when viewed from above and introduce a dynamic rhythm to the otherwise strictly cylindrical forms. The tallest tube establishes the principal vertical axis, while the two shorter tubes create a stepped silhouette. The circular base provides stability and visually unifies the composition. The silver-plated surface has developed a varied patina, with areas of dark oxidation, warm brown discoloration, and lighter silver tones emphasizing the individual forms and their intersections.

Ivar Ålenius-Björk (1905–1978) was a Swedish sculptor and designer recognized for his decorative metalwork and sculptural objects. Working during a period when Swedish decorative arts were transitioning from the ornamental traditions of the 1920s toward the functionalist ideals of the 1930s, he developed designs characterized by simplified geometry and expressive silhouettes. His work for Ystad Metall includes a range of decorative objects in which sculptural composition and practical function are closely connected.

Ystad Metall was a Swedish metalworking manufacturer based in Ystad, particularly associated with decorative metal objects, candlesticks, and domestic accessories produced during the 20th century. The company collaborated with several Swedish designers and became known for combining traditional metalworking techniques with contemporary stylistic developments. Its production from the 1930s reflects the influence of both Art Deco and the emerging Scandinavian modernist movement. The underside of this vase is stamped with the Ystad Metall maker’s mark and “Sweden,” confirming its manufacturer.

The vase remains in good vintage condition, with visible signs of age and use. The silver plating shows substantial natural patination, including oxidation, surface discoloration, and areas of wear that produce a mottled appearance across the cylindrical surfaces. Minor scratches and handling marks are also present, consistent with its age. The original geometric form and structural composition remain intact.

Diameter 8 cm (3.1 inches), height 30.5 cm (12 inches).
