Information

The “UN-Chair” model B-37, designed by Jacob Kjær in 1949 and produced by Christensen & Larsen in Denmark, stands as a notable example of Scandinavian modern design with international significance. Originally commissioned for the United Nations headquarters in New York, this armchair highlights the global reach and influence of Danish craftsmanship during the mid-20th century.

The chair’s frame is constructed from solid cherry wood, prized for its warm tone and fine grain. The design features finely tapered legs and gracefully curved armrests, reflecting Kjær’s mastery of precision woodworking. Structural stability is achieved through horizontal stretchers, which also contribute to the chair’s open and visually light appearance. The rounded backrest flows seamlessly into the armrests, forming a continuous shape that balances aesthetic fluidity with ergonomic support.

The upholstery consists of the original black leather, which covers both the seat and the curved backrest. Over time, the leather has developed a rich patina, indicative of the material’s quality and durability. Some subtle signs of wear are present, consistent with the chair’s age and use, adding to its authenticity and historical character.

Jacob Kjær was a cabinetmaker known for his exacting craftsmanship, merging traditional woodworking techniques with modernist design principles. His furniture is often marked by careful proportions, choice materials, and a commitment to functional elegance. The B-37 model is among his most celebrated works, embodying Denmark’s reputation for excellence and its role in furnishing prominent international institutions.

The chair measures 61 cm in width, 55 cm in depth, and 77 cm in height (24.0 x 21.7 x 30.3 inches), with a seat height of 45 cm (17.7 inches). It is in well-preserved condition, with the cherry wood frame displaying a warm natural finish and the original leather upholstery retaining its supple texture.
