Jacob Kjær armchair
The “UN-Chair” model B-37, designed by Jacob Kjær in 1949 and produced by the Danish cabinetmaker Christensen & Larsen, is a distinguished example of Scandinavian modern design with significant historical context. Originally crafted for the United Nations headquarters in New York, this armchair exemplifies Danish craftsmanship and the refined principles of mid-century furniture design.
The frame is constructed from teak wood, selected for its durability and warm coloration, while the armrests are made from Cuban mahogany, offering a subtle yet elegant contrast in both tone and texture. The precise joinery and seamless integration of components demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship involved. Horizontal stretchers reinforce the structure, providing stability without compromising the chair’s open and lightweight aesthetic. The backrest curves smoothly into the armrests, creating a continuous form that balances visual flow with ergonomic comfort.
The seat retains its original leather upholstery, which has developed a rich patina over time. The leather molds naturally to the contours of the seat, presenting a smooth, organic surface that reflects years of use while maintaining its structural integrity and authenticity.
Jacob Kjær was renowned for his meticulous attention to detail and dedication to quality materials. His designs combine refined proportions with superior craftsmanship, often featuring elegant curves and tactile finishes. The B-37 armchair stands as a notable example of Danish furniture’s influence on the international stage, merging functional comfort with an understated sculptural elegance.
The chair measures 61 cm in width, 55 cm in depth, and 77 cm in height (24.0 x 21.7 x 30.3 inches), with a seat height of 45 cm (17.7 inches). The condition is well-preserved, with the wood retaining its natural warmth and the original leather upholstery displaying an even, aged patina.
