Information

This rare armchair, model M70/21, was designed by Danish architect and cabinetmaker Jacob Kjær and produced in his own Copenhagen workshop in 1962. The frame is crafted from solid rosewood, exhibiting the deep warm tones and expressive grain patterns characteristic of the species, balancing structural strength with visual refinement. The upholstery is original black leather, aged with a natural patina and subtle creasing that reflects careful use and preservation over time.

The chair’s form reflects Kjær’s architectural background, emphasizing precise proportion, material integrity, and detailed craftsmanship. The gently sculpted armrests feature rounded inner edges, enhancing comfort and providing an elegant tactile experience. The rear legs are subtly angled to impart a sense of movement while maintaining visual stability. The leather is tightly upholstered over a gently curved backrest and saddle-shaped seat, with a continuous line connecting the back and arms to unify the silhouette.

Jacob Kjær (1896–1957) was a pivotal figure in Danish furniture design, bridging classical craftsmanship and modernist ideals. Trained as a cabinetmaker and educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, his work is marked by minimalist forms, exacting joinery, and dedication to material quality. Although he designed for public institutions, many of his most notable pieces were produced in limited runs in his workshop for exhibitions and commissions. As President of the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild and a regular contributor to the annual Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibitions, Kjær was a key advocate for Danish functionalism.

This particular chair carries the original maker’s label from Kjær’s studio, dated 1962, indicating it was produced posthumously under the workshop’s continued operation. It remains in excellent vintage condition with minor wear on the leather and frame consistent with age.

The chair measures 65 cm in width, 64 cm in depth, and 89 cm in height, with a seat height of 43 cm, approximately 25.6 x 25.2 x 35 inches, and a seat height of 16.9 inches.
