Johannes Andersen coffee table

This rare coffee table, model Capri, was designed by the Danish designer Johannes Andersen in the 1960s and produced by Trensum Möbelfabrik in Sweden. Andersen was one of the central figures in Scandinavian modern furniture design, noted for his organic lines and elegant detailing. The Capri model demonstrates his ability to merge sculptural form with functional refinement.

The table is constructed in rosewood with mahogany details, both prized mid-century materials for their durability and rich visual character. The rosewood top displays highly figured grain patterns with dark streaks set against a warm reddish-brown background, lending the surface depth and dynamism. The edges are smoothly rounded, giving the piece an organic softness, while the sculpted integrated drawer handles are characteristic of Andersen’s approach to form, carved seamlessly into the frame rather than applied as separate elements.

Supported by tapered legs, the structure conveys a light and elevated expression, yet remains solid in construction. The craftsmanship is evident in the precise joinery, the subtle curvature of the edges, and the attention to ergonomics in the carved drawer pulls.
