Jørgen Høj hallway furniture
This rare set, designed by Jørgen Høj and produced by Niels Vitsøe in Denmark during the 1960s, includes two stools and a matching side table that exemplify Scandinavian modernist principles with a focus on clean lines, industrial materials, and functional versatility.
All pieces feature aluminum frames, providing a lightweight yet robust construction. The stools are fitted with original leather cushions that have developed a rich patina over time, exhibiting deep tufting and supported by black leather straps. These straps offer both flexibility and structural support, while the leather shows natural tonal variations and markings consistent with age. The side table complements the stools with a thick glass top resting on an identical aluminum frame, establishing visual continuity throughout the set.
Jørgen Høj was a Danish designer noted for his minimalist and industrial style, often merging precise metalwork with organic materials to achieve a refined balance between function and visual lightness.
Niels Vitsøe, the manufacturer, was distinguished for its craftsmanship and pioneering use of aluminum in mid-century Scandinavian furniture—a material less common in the region during that period. The integration of aluminum, leather, and glass in this set underscores the modernist fascination with contrasting materials and modular design.
Each piece measures 60 cm in width and depth (23.6 inches), with the table standing 36 cm high (14.2 inches) and the stools 32 cm high (12.6 inches). The modular design allows flexible arrangements, making the stools and table a cohesive and adaptable seating and surface grouping.
