Josef Frank ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp, model no. 2538, commonly known as “Kinabollen” was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden. Created in circa 1940, the lamp exemplifies Frank’s fascination with organic form, material innovation, and cultural synthesis. The spherical, softly faceted shade is constructed from spray plastic applied over a fine wireframe, creating a lightweight structure that diffuses light evenly through its semi-translucent surface. The upper and lower fittings, as well as the ceiling cup, are made of brass, lending a warm reflective quality that complements the soft glow of the shade.
The lamp’s form is inspired by East Asian lanterns, reflecting Frank’s interest in global design traditions. Its sculptural silhouette is at once functional and decorative, balancing geometry and softness. When illuminated, the surface emits a warm amber tone that enhances its tactile character, emphasizing Frank’s ability to combine modern materials with a sense of natural warmth.
Josef Frank (1885–1967) was one of the leading figures in 20th-century design, known for his association with the Vienna School of Architecture and later for his work in Sweden with Estrid Ericson at Svenskt Tenn. His designs often merged rational construction with a humanistic approach to interiors, where color, texture, and form were used to create comfort and visual harmony. Svenskt Tenn, founded in 1924, became a key platform for Frank’s vision of modern living — one that embraced craftsmanship, global influences, and an optimistic sense of form.
This example remains in good vintage condition, showing age-appropriate patina and minor signs of use on the brass components. The plastic-coated surface is well preserved, with consistent tone and only light wear visible upon close inspection.
