Josef Frank ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp, model 2538—commonly referred to as Kinabollen—was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden. Created in 1940, the lamp reflects Frank’s interest in round, softly sculptural forms influenced by East Asian lanterns, which he reinterpreted through the materials and production techniques available in Sweden at the time. The shade is constructed from a wireframe over which a sprayed plastic membrane has been applied. This method produces a thin, semi-translucent surface with a fibrous texture that diffuses light gently. The structure forms ten distinct segments, giving the lamp its characteristic bulbous, rhythmic silhouette.
The upper and lower rings, as well as the suspension components, are executed in brass. These elements introduce warm metallic tones that complement the pale matte surface of the shade. The brass shows a naturally developed patina, with small variations in color consistent with age. The lamp hangs from a textile-covered cord that leads to an original brass ceiling canopy. The total height can be adjusted, offering flexibility in placement.
Josef Frank’s lighting designs for Svenskt Tenn often combined organic form with an emphasis on atmosphere. Model 2538 exemplifies his belief that interior objects should contribute to comfort and visual softness. When illuminated, the sprayed plastic surface reveals its intricate internal fibers, creating a warm, ambient glow with clearly defined vertical lines tracing the frame beneath.
The lamp is in good vintage condition with signs of usage and a pleasing patina to both the shade and brass elements. Minor surface marks and age-related wear correspond to its original materials and mid-century production.
The diameter is 33 cm, or approximately 13 inches. The overall height is 108 cm, or about 42.5 inches, and can be adjusted depending on installation.
