Josef Frank coffee table
This rare coffee or side table was designed in 1934 by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden. It exemplifies Frank’s approach to furniture design, where restrained modernist form meets refined material sensibility. The table consists of a circular top made of natural stone—marble—resting on a mahogany frame. The marble is highly polished and reveals an intricate surface of organic veining and coloration, adding depth and visual interest to the otherwise minimal silhouette.
The frame is crafted in solid mahogany with slender, tapering legs that slightly flare toward the floor. The leg design contributes to a visual lightness, contrasting with the weight and density of the marble. The mahogany has aged gracefully, exhibiting a deep, reddish-brown tone with a well-developed patina. Joinery and transitions between elements are seamless, demonstrating a high level of craftsmanship.
The table’s shape is geometrically precise with a perfect circular form. It functions well as a side or coffee table, offering versatility in placement and use. The condition is excellent, with only minor signs of age-related wear. The wood finish is intact and the marble top remains clean and free of cracks or major imperfections.
Josef Frank, originally from Vienna, was a key figure in early modern design but distanced himself from the harsher functionalism of his contemporaries by embracing color, pattern, and classical influence. After moving to Sweden in the 1930s, he collaborated closely with Svenskt Tenn, the Swedish firm that would become the primary producer of his work. This table, dating to the early phase of that collaboration, reflects his evolving aesthetic: modernist in proportion but softened by choice of materials and an enduring appreciation for traditional European elegance.
