Josef Frank coffee table
Rare “Diplomat” coffee table designed by Josef Frank in 1949 and produced by AB Eriksson & Söner, Sweden. This example was manufactured during the 1990s for Svenskt Tenn and represents one of Josef Frank’s most refined and architecturally balanced table designs, combining restrained proportions with exceptional cabinetmaking quality and richly figured materials.
Executed in walnut, the table features a square top with softly rounded corners and elegantly tapered legs terminating in subtle rounded feet. The construction is remarkably refined, with the legs flowing seamlessly into the apron and tabletop frame, emphasizing the sculptural clarity of the design. The tabletop is veneered with highly expressive walnut displaying dramatic mirrored grain patterns and deep tonal variation ranging from warm reddish browns to darker chocolate hues. The natural figuring creates a vivid, almost organic movement across the surface, highlighting Frank’s sensitivity to material and proportion.
Although Josef Frank is often associated with vibrant textiles and expressive interiors, his furniture designs reveal a more restrained yet highly sophisticated approach. The Diplomat table exemplifies his ability to merge elegance, comfort and practicality without relying on excessive ornamentation. The gently curved corners and slender legs lend the piece a light and graceful appearance while maintaining a strong architectural presence.
Produced by AB Eriksson & Söner in Virserum for Svenskt Tenn, the table reflects the exceptionally high standards associated with Swedish cabinetmaking traditions. The craftsmanship is evident throughout, from the precise joinery to the carefully matched walnut veneer and softly finished edges.
The table remains in excellent condition with only minor signs of use consistent with age. The walnut has developed a rich depth and warm patina, further enhancing the character of the piece.
