Information

This is a rare table mirror designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1950s. The mirror is composed of brass and teak, materials frequently favored by Frank for their warmth, durability, and visual contrast. This piece exemplifies the refined functionalism and humanistic elegance characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian design.

The mirror features a circular reflective surface encased in a slim, brass frame with a finely machined edge. It is mounted on a brass axis that allows it to tilt, enabling adjustable angles. The support arms are delicately curved and attached with brass knobs, maintaining the mirror’s geometric clarity while allowing controlled mobility.

The frame is supported by a central upright brass post, which rises from a round, weighted base. The base itself features a concentric ring-engraved top surface that adds a tactile rhythm to the otherwise smooth brass finish. The rear of the mirror is backed in mahogany wood, offering a warm contrast to the mirror’s metallic brightness and adding a sense of organic sophistication.

The mirror measures 56 cm in width, 22 cm in depth, and 55 cm in height (22.05 x 8.66 x 21.65 inches). It is in good vintage condition with light surface wear, mild oxidation on the brass, and minimal handling marks, consistent with its age and careful use.

Josef Frank (1885–1967) was an Austrian-Swedish architect and designer renowned for his contributions to modern Swedish design through his work with Svenskt Tenn. His approach emphasized livability, material quality, and visual warmth, often blending functional design with expressive, personal aesthetics. Though best known for his colorful textile patterns and furniture, Frank’s accessories, including this mirror, reflect his broader commitment to design as a civilizing and comforting art.

Svenskt Tenn, founded in Stockholm in 1924, became an iconic institution under the creative direction of Frank. Their collaboration resulted in a distinctive aesthetic that combined international modernism with Swedish craftsmanship and eclecticism.
