Josef Frank table mirror
This rare table mirror was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1950s. The piece exemplifies Frank’s characteristic approach to design, balancing decorative detail with functional clarity through the combination of brass and teak materials.
The mirror is circular and framed by a distinctive scalloped or looped brass surround that functions both as ornament and visual boundary. This decorative motif reflects Frank’s tendency to reinterpret 19th-century ornamental styles within a modern Scandinavian context, creating a subtle yet elegant statement. The mirror is supported by a single upright brass rod anchored to a flat circular brass base, providing stable support. The backplate is veneered in teak, showcasing a rich reddish-brown tone with a matte finish and a visible straight grain pattern. An adjustable pivot mechanism allows the mirror to be tilted and secured at various angles, enhancing its practical usability.
The brass surface displays a warm patinated finish with oxidation and wear consistent with its age, while the teak backing retains its natural coloration and texture. The mirror measures 33.5 cm in width, 16 cm in depth, and 44 cm in height (approximately 13.2 inches wide, 6.3 inches deep, and 17.3 inches high).
Josef Frank (1885–1967), originally Austrian, became a central figure in Swedish modern design through his longstanding collaboration with Svenskt Tenn. His work is noted for its eclecticism, craftsmanship, and a softened modernism that diverged from strict functionalism. Svenskt Tenn, founded in 1924 by Estrid Ericson, served as the primary outlet for Frank’s furniture and interior designs, many of which continue to be produced today.
This mirror remains in good vintage condition, retaining original materials and a naturally aged patina that enhances its historical character.
