Information

This very rare addition sofa or armless easy chair, model no. 4698, was designed by Kaare Klint in 1933 and produced by Rud. Rasmussen in Copenhagen, Denmark. Crafted from solid Cuban mahogany and upholstered in original niger leather, the piece exemplifies Klint’s commitment to human-proportioned design, craftsmanship, material honesty, and classical principles within modern design.

The chair features a rectilinear form with a low backrest and armless silhouette. Both the seat and backrest are fully upholstered with deep button tufting, lending a refined, architectural quality. The minimal yet sturdy frame is constructed from dense Cuban mahogany with straight square legs, designed to keep the upholstery as the focal point. The deep brown niger leather has developed a rich patina, showing creasing, tonal variations, and wear typical of early 20th-century niger leather.

The condition corresponds with age and original use. The leather shows moderate patina and cracking, particularly on the seat, with softened tufted areas and tonal variation from use. The wooden structure remains stable, with minimal wear and a well-maintained finish that harmonizes with the aged leather.

Kaare Klint, often considered the father of Danish modern furniture, merged classical design language with functionalist ideals, laying the foundation for later Scandinavian design generations. Rud. Rasmussen, established in 1869, was one of Denmark’s premier cabinetmakers and closely collaborated with Klint and other Royal Academy architects.

This piece represents early Danish functionalism, predating the mid-century era and influencing the evolution of Scandinavian modernism.

The dimensions are 92 centimeters wide, 70 centimeters deep, and 78.5 centimeters high, with a seat height of 38 centimeters (approximately 36.2 by 27.6 by 30.9 inches, seat height 15 inches).
