Kaare Klint easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs, model 5313, was designed by Kaare Klint in 1927 and produced by Rud. Rasmussen Cabinetmakers in Copenhagen, Denmark. The chairs are executed in solid mahogany with their original niger leather upholstery, which has developed a rich, warm patina over time. The design is emblematic of Klint’s meticulous approach to proportion, comfort, and craftsmanship, blending traditional cabinetmaking techniques with a refined, modern sensibility.
The form features a slightly inclined backrest and gently flared armrests, creating an inviting and supportive seating experience. The seats are fitted with loose cushions for added comfort, while the straight front legs and subtly splayed rear legs contribute to the chair’s balanced stance. The original niger leather, in a deep honey-brown tone, displays natural creases, wear marks, and color variations consistent with age, enhancing the authenticity and character of the pieces.
Kaare Klint, regarded as the father of modern Danish furniture design, was instrumental in establishing functionalism in Danish interiors and in founding the Furniture School at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. His work often drew from historical references while distilling them into timeless, functional forms. Rud. Rasmussen Cabinetmakers, active since the mid-19th century, was one of Denmark’s most esteemed workshops, known for their uncompromising quality and long-standing collaborations with leading designers.
This model reflects the transitional period between classical furniture traditions and the emerging modernist ethos of the early 20th century. Its restrained elegance, premium materials, and hand-crafted construction place it firmly within the canon of Scandinavian design history.
