Kaare Klint easy chairs
This is a rare pair of model 4488 Bergère easy chairs designed by Kaare Klint and produced by Rud. Rasmussen Cabinetmakers in Copenhagen, Denmark. The model was originally designed in 1931 and is emblematic of Klint’s rigorous design approach, which combined classical proportions with meticulous craftsmanship and the use of noble materials.
The chairs exhibit a distinctly architectural form with upright sides, a subtly sloping backrest, and well-proportioned legs. The structural frame is executed in solid mahogany with refined inlays in Brazilian rosewood, which introduce a decorative contrast through the use of dark linear grain patterning. The sides and back are hand-woven in natural cane, contributing both lightness and texture to the otherwise linear frame. The seats and back cushions are upholstered in aged cognac brown leather, which has developed a rich patina and natural creasing from use. The leather is supple and has oxidized beautifully, particularly on the upper backrests, lending a sense of historical continuity and tactile depth.
Kaare Klint (1888–1954), widely regarded as the father of Danish modern design, was known for his methodical study of ergonomics, materiality, and typology. He championed the principle that modern design should emerge from tradition through rational analysis and fine craftsmanship. Many of his pieces were produced by Rud. Rasmussen, a premier Danish cabinetmaker founded in 1869 and known for its collaborations with major Danish designers. Together, Klint and Rasmussen defined the modern Danish cabinetmaking tradition, rooted in utility, clarity, and integrity of materials.
These chairs reflect a transitional style that merges 18th-century French seating typologies with early modernist restraint. Their straight legs, rectilinear forms, and use of woven cane reference historical bergère chairs, while the lack of excessive ornamentation and clarity of construction exemplify the modern functionalist ethos.
Condition is good vintage, with consistent signs of age and use across the leather and canework. The frames remain structurally sound, and the caning is intact with minor wear. The leather shows pronounced but stable patination, adding to the visual character and authenticity.
