Information

This very rare sofa, model no. 4118, was designed by Kaare Klint and produced by the master cabinetmaker Rud. Rasmussen in Denmark. As one of the seminal figures in Danish modernism, Klint’s work is characterized by rigorous attention to proportion, craftsmanship, and functionality—values that are fully embodied in this refined and architecturally structured piece.

The sofa is upholstered in high-quality, caramel-toned leather that has developed a distinguished patina over time. The surface shows gentle creasing and tonal variations, adding depth and character consistent with age and careful use. The leather retains a smooth, tactile quality, and its natural aging process complements the rich tones of the wooden frame, reinforcing the sofa’s warm and dignified presence.

Structurally, the frame is made from solid Cuban mahogany, a material known for its dense grain and deep, reddish-brown hue. The wood exhibits a luminous aged sheen and is free from structural damage, maintaining both visual richness and integrity. The frame features a classic cross-braced base design, a detail that not only enhances the sofa’s stability but also speaks to Klint’s interest in uniting form with subtle ornamentation rooted in function.

The silhouette is clean and geometric, defined by gently slanted, high armrests and a slightly reclined backrest that offers ergonomic support without compromising its linear elegance. The proportions are carefully considered, with Klint’s academic approach to design evident in the balanced relationship between vertical and horizontal elements. The construction reflects a meticulous attention to detail, characteristic of Rud. Rasmussen’s workshop, which was closely aligned with Klint throughout his career.

Kaare Klint (1888–1954) is widely regarded as the father of Danish modern furniture design. His work laid the foundation for what became the Danish design movement, emphasizing clarity of form, quality materials, and traditional joinery. Klint’s approach was both scholarly and human-centered, often based on extensive studies of historical furniture and ergonomic analysis. Model no. 4118 is exemplary of this method, blending modernist precision with classical influences.

This piece remains in very good vintage condition. The leather upholstery exhibits natural wear and aging with no structural compromise, while the Cuban mahogany frame is stable and well-preserved, maintaining its original finish.

The dimensions are 199 cm in width, 80 cm in depth, 87 cm in height, with a seat height of 38 cm. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 78.3 inches wide, 31.5 inches deep, 34.3 inches high, with a seat height of 15 inches.
