Kaare Klint sofa
This exceptionally rare sofa, model no. 4118, was designed by Kaare Klint and produced by Rud. Rasmussen in Denmark in 1933. Klint, often referred to as the father of modern Danish furniture design, was known for his rigorous approach to proportion, craftsmanship, and function — qualities that are all evident in this piece. His designs set the standard for Danish functionalism and influenced generations of designers.
The sofa is crafted from Cuban mahogany, a highly valued hardwood known for its fine grain and deep, warm tone, paired with original niger leather upholstery that has developed a striking, natural patina over time. The leather, rich in character, enhances the piece’s historical authenticity and tactile appeal. The frame is constructed with traditional joinery, emphasizing both strength and refined detailing, while the base is supported by an elegantly structured stretcher system — a hallmark of Klint’s architectural approach to furniture.
With its upright profile, high back, and gently curved armrests, the sofa embodies a restrained yet monumental presence, reflecting Klint’s philosophy of furniture as both a practical object and a timeless work of design. Originally intended for prestigious interiors, this model remains one of his most sought-after creations due to its rarity and historical significance.
