Kai Kristiansen coffee table
This coffee table was designed by Kai Kristiansen and produced by Feldballes Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. Executed in rosewood, the table highlights the expressive grain patterns and warm tonal variations of the wood, which was a favored material in Danish mid century modern furniture. The surface has softly rounded edges, and the construction rests on tapering legs connected by horizontal stretchers, lending both strength and a refined linear profile.
A distinctive feature of this design is the inclusion of two extendable leaves, integrated beneath the tabletop and able to slide out when additional surface area is needed. This functional solution reflects the Scandinavian commitment to adaptable furniture suited to varied living environments. The extensions are veneered in matching rosewood to ensure a consistent and uninterrupted surface.
The piece has been completely restored and is presented in excellent vintage condition. Kristiansen’s designs are characterized by an understated elegance, emphasizing proportion, detail, and the inherent qualities of the chosen material. Feldballes Møbelfabrik, known for precise craftsmanship, was one of the Danish workshops that realized several of his designs with meticulous attention to quality.
As a mid century Scandinavian work, this table embodies the values of the period: modern clarity of form, craftsmanship rooted in cabinetmaking traditions, and practical solutions integrated into elegant structures.
