Information

This rare set of fourteen dining chairs, model 30, was designed by Kai Kristiansen and produced by the Danish manufacturer Villy Schou Andersen in 1958. The model represents an important example of Danish modern furniture from the late 1950s, a period when designers focused on combining refined craftsmanship with functional clarity and carefully balanced proportions. Kai Kristiansen is widely recognized for his precise approach to furniture design, often emphasizing structural elegance and ergonomic comfort while maintaining a restrained aesthetic characteristic of Scandinavian modernism.

The chairs are constructed from solid rosewood, a material highly valued in mid-century Danish furniture production for its density, durability, and distinctive visual qualities. The wood displays deep reddish-brown tones with pronounced grain patterns and natural tonal variation, ranging from darker chocolate hues to lighter streaks within the grain structure. The frames are defined by slender proportions and finely executed joinery, with gently tapered legs that contribute to the overall lightness of the design. Horizontal stretchers between the legs reinforce the construction while maintaining a balanced and visually stable structure.

The backrests consist of two separate horizontal rails mounted between vertical supports. Both elements are slightly curved, following the natural contour of the back and providing ergonomic support while maintaining a visually open structure. The upper rail is softly rounded and subtly arched, while the lower rail mirrors this curvature with a slightly deeper profile. This double-rail configuration is a defining feature of the model and demonstrates Kristiansen’s attention to both comfort and sculptural form. The back posts extend upward beyond the rails, creating a distinctive profile when viewed from the side.

The seats are shaped with a gentle concave contour that enhances sitting comfort while visually softening the geometric frame structure. The chairs have been fully restored and the seats have been newly upholstered in Gabriel Savak plain fabric designed by Tove Kindt Larsen. The upholstery features a light, warm off-white tone that contrasts with the darker rosewood frame while maintaining a restrained and harmonious appearance consistent with Scandinavian design principles.

Kai Kristiansen was one of the prominent Danish furniture designers of the mid-twentieth century, educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under the influential designer Kaare Klint. His work frequently focused on functional flexibility and refined craftsmanship, and many of his designs were produced by smaller Danish workshops known for their high-quality woodworking. Villy Schou Andersen was among the manufacturers who produced Kristiansen’s furniture during this period, contributing to the dissemination of Danish modern design both domestically and internationally.

Each chair measures 49.5 cm in width, 45 cm in depth, and 77.5 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 19.5 inches in width, 17.7 inches in depth, and 30.5 inches in height. The seat height is 43 cm, equivalent to approximately 16.9 inches. The set remains in excellent restored condition with newly upholstered seats and well-preserved rosewood frames that display a rich patina and natural grain character consistent with the material and age.
