Poul Hundevad dining chairs
This set of ten Model 30 dining chairs was designed by Poul Hundevad and produced by Poul Hundevad & Co in Vamdrup, Denmark during the 1960s. They exemplify mid-century Scandinavian craftsmanship through a balanced combination of refined woodworking, ergonomic consideration, and minimalistic form.
The chairs are crafted from richly grained rosewood, a material favored in Danish modernism for its deep color variation and expressive texture. The visible patterns in the wood grain enhance the visual depth and individuality of each piece. Structurally, the chairs feature a low, horizontally slatted backrest composed of two curved cylindrical elements that subtly contour to the back, contributing both to comfort and sculptural presence. The back slats are joined with vertical uprights and connected to a subtly arched seat frame. The rear legs extend seamlessly from the backrest uprights, tapering downward in a fluid, organic motion.
The seats have been professionally reupholstered in dark brown leather, providing a soft yet durable surface that complements the dark rosewood tones. The saddle-shaped seatpan enhances sitting comfort and references traditional Danish joinery techniques. Angular braces connect the front and back legs, adding structural support and visual lightness.
Poul Hundevad (1917–2011) was a Danish cabinetmaker and designer known for his attention to function and clean-lined aesthetics. His designs often blended traditional woodworking with modernist principles, and he produced works in collaboration with other master craftsmen. The firm Poul Hundevad & Co was established in Vamdrup and became known for high-quality execution and select use of materials, particularly rosewood and teak.
The Model 30 is a rare example within Hundevad’s output and showcases the influence of wider Danish modern trends while retaining unique sculptural elements. These chairs would have been contemporaneous with designs by Hans J. Wegner and Niels Møller, sharing a focus on craftsmanship and subtle ergonomic shaping.
The dimensions of each chair are 49 cm wide, 46 cm deep, and 77.5 cm high (approximately 19.3 x 18.1 x 30.5 inches), with a seat height of 42 cm (approximately 16.5 inches). The set remains in excellent restored condition, with the rosewood frames well-preserved and the new leather upholstery clean and tightly fitted.
