Kai Kristiansen sideboards
This pair of small sideboards, model 42, was designed by Kai Kristiansen and produced by Feldballes Møbelfabrik in Denmark in 1958. The design belongs to the formative period of Scandinavian mid-century modern furniture, where compact storage pieces were developed with a strong emphasis on proportion, material quality, and refined detailing.
Each sideboard is constructed in rosewood, with carefully selected veneers displaying a rich, warm brown tone and a pronounced, symmetrical grain pattern across the front panels. The cabinets have a rectilinear body elevated on slender, tapered legs, giving them a light and balanced stance despite their solid construction. Sliding doors with integrated circular pulls provide access to the interior, maintaining a clean front elevation without applied hardware. The interiors are fitted with drawers and storage compartments, executed in lighter wood, creating a subtle contrast to the darker exterior and reflecting a high level of cabinetmaking precision.
Kai Kristiansen is known for his rational and elegant approach to furniture design, often combining strict geometry with soft proportions and functional clarity. Model 42 exemplifies his ability to distill storage furniture to its essential elements while maintaining visual warmth through material choice and craftsmanship. Feldballes Møbelfabrik was an important Danish producer during this period, recognized for collaborating with leading designers and for producing furniture with consistently high construction standards and refined finishes.
The pair is in excellent vintage condition, with only minor signs of use consistent with age. The rosewood surfaces retain a well-preserved finish with a gentle patina, and the structural elements, including legs and sliding mechanisms, are stable and fully functional. Any small marks are superficial and do not detract from the overall appearance or integrity of the pieces.
Each sideboard measures approximately 85.5 cm in width, 40 cm in depth, and 76 cm in height. In inches, this corresponds to about 33.7 inches wide, 15.7 inches deep, and 29.9 inches high.
