Information

This easy chair, model Stora Eva, was designed by the Swedish architect and designer Kerstin Hörlin-Holmquist during the 1950s and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK). The chair is constructed in beech and retains its original brown fabric upholstery, which shows the gentle patina of age. The high, sculptural backrest with buttoned detailing gives the piece an elegant silhouette, blending functional comfort with refined aesthetics. Its organic curves and soft lines reflect Hörlin-Holmquist’s approach to design, where modernist ideals were balanced with a humanistic softness.

Hörlin-Holmquist was known for her contribution to Scandinavian modernism, particularly her designs for NK in the 1950s and 1960s. Her “Paradise” series, of which Stora Eva is a part, sought to create timeless furniture that could endure changes in style and taste. Nordiska Kompaniet, one of Sweden’s leading department stores and producers of high-quality furnishings, collaborated with some of the most important designers of the period, ensuring both craftsmanship and innovation in their output.

This chair is a fine example of mid-century Scandinavian design, where form and function are seamlessly combined. It remains in good vintage condition, with minor signs of use and some dryness in the padding consistent with age, which does not detract from its structural integrity or historical value.

Dimensions: width 74 cm (29.1 in), depth 80 cm (31.5 in), height 97 cm (38.2 in), seat height 39 cm (15.4 in).
