Kerstin Hörlin-Holmquist easy chairs
This is a rare pair of “Lilla Kraal” easy chairs, designed by Kerstin Hörlin-Holmquist and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Sweden during the 1950s. These chairs feature a distinctive combination of natural cane, iron, and leather, characteristic of Scandinavian modernism’s exploration of tactile materials and light, sculptural forms. The seat and backrest are crafted from handwoven natural cane in warm golden-brown hues, forming an enveloping, organic shell that contrasts with the dark, minimalistic iron frame. Small leather straps secure the cane seat to the iron frame, adding a subtle and functional detail.
The form of these easy chairs is defined by a low, reclining silhouette. The gently curved seat and backrest cradle the sitter, emphasizing relaxation and comfort. The iron base is finely proportioned, with slender tubular legs connected by elegantly curved crossbars, lending the chairs an airy, weightless quality. The deliberate contrast between the warm, natural cane and the stark, industrial iron frame reflects a modernist sensibility rooted in material honesty and structural clarity.
These examples are in good vintage condition, exhibiting signs of age and use consistent with their period. The cane seats display minor wear and a few small damages, typical of vintage woven material, but remain structurally intact. The iron frames retain their original finish, showing light surface patina and minor wear marks. The leather straps show signs of aging, contributing to the overall vintage character of the pieces.
