Kjell Blomberg vase
This rare hand-blown glass vase was designed by Kjell Blomberg and produced by Gullaskruf Glasbruk in Sweden in 1963. It serves as a distinguished example of Swedish modernist glass from the early 1960s, noted for its refined organic form and subtle chromatic qualities. The vase is crafted from pale green glass, featuring a smooth and translucent surface that softly modulates light. Its silhouette is gently bulbous with a narrow, tapering neck that ends in a precisely formed spout-like opening. This detail adds a functional yet sculptural accent to the otherwise minimalist design, emphasizing the purity of the form and the inherent quality of the glass.
Kjell Blomberg (1931–1989) was chief designer at Gullaskruf during an innovative period for the company. His work is marked by technical expertise in creating thin-walled vessels with organic geometries and understated elegance. Gullaskruf, which operated from 1893 until 1983, was a key player in Sweden’s renowned “Kingdom of Crystal.” The company gained recognition for its design-forward collaborations, especially throughout the postwar decades, fostering modernist expressions in glass.
This particular vase reflects Blomberg’s approach to smaller-scale vessels that balance decorative appeal with practical use. A Gullaskruf label remains affixed to the body, verifying its provenance. The piece is in very good condition, free of chips or cracks, showing only minor wear consistent with its vintage. The dimensions are 12 cm in diameter and 18 cm in height (approximately 4.7 x 7.1 inches).
