Kjell Blomberg

Kjell Blomberg (1931–1989) was a Swedish ceramic and glass designer recognized for his refined and expressive work within postwar Scandinavian design. Educated at Konstfack in Stockholm, he became associated with several prominent manufacturers, including Upsala-Ekeby, Gabriel Keramik, and Gullaskruf, where he developed objects characterized by clean forms, confident decoration, and a subtle sense of playfulness.

Biography

Kjell Blomberg trained in ceramics and design at Konstfack, establishing a strong foundation in both artistic expression and industrial production. Following a period of practical training at Arabia in Finland, he joined Upsala-Ekeby in the early 1950s, where he worked with decorative ceramics and tableware, contributing models and surface designs distinguished by clarity of form and lively color combinations. His work for Gefle and Karlskrona similarly reflects a balance between functional design and decorative character.

In the mid-1950s, Blomberg expanded his practice to include glass design, collaborating with Gullaskruf glassworks, where he produced lighting and decorative objects defined by streamlined silhouettes and carefully controlled ornamentation. He later continued his career at Gabriel Keramik, while also teaching at Konstfack, sharing his knowledge of ceramics and glass with a new generation of designers.

Blomberg’s work remains representative of the versatility and optimism of Scandinavian design in the postwar decades, combining technical skill with a clear visual identity. Today, his objects are appreciated for their sculptural qualities, thoughtful decoration, and strong connection to the Swedish studio and factory traditions of the period.
