Kristian Solmer Vedel easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs with a matching side table, model Modus, was designed by Kristian Solmer Vedel and produced by Søren Willadsens Møbelfabrik in Denmark in 1963. The ensemble reflects the modular and sculptural approach central to mid-century Danish design, blending functionality, material richness, and exceptional craftsmanship. Each piece is designed to evoke a sense of elegance and simplicity while maintaining a practical, user-centered functionality.
The frames of the chairs are crafted from solid rosewood, chosen for its deep, variegated grain and rich warm tone. The design of the chairs features rounded vertical supports with floating horizontal braces, resulting in a construction that feels visually light yet remains structurally stable. The original black leather upholstery exhibits a worn-in softness with visible patina, adding to the vintage charm of the chairs. The cushions are generously filled, resting on suspended leather slings that provide a deep and relaxed seating experience, ensuring both comfort and durability.
The accompanying side table follows the same design language as the chairs, constructed from rosewood with a matching frame. The tabletop is inset with black glass, creating a refined contrast of materials while maintaining continuity with the color palette established by the leather. A practical detail of the table is its discreetly fitted wheels, which enhance mobility without disrupting the visual integrity of the design, making it both functional and adaptable to different settings.
Kristian Solmer Vedel, known for his focus on ergonomics and modularity in furniture design, created the Modus collection as part of his broader interest in user adaptability and simplicity. With Modus, Vedel blurred the lines between architectural structure and furniture, drawing upon his training as a cabinetmaker. The result is a system that balances aesthetic elegance with practical design, reflecting Vedel’s dedication to human-centered functionality.
Søren Willadsens Møbelfabrik, the producer of this set, was a leading Danish furniture manufacturer that collaborated with prominent designers like Vedel. The firm, a part of the Danish Furnituremakers Control program, was known for producing high-quality furniture, guaranteeing excellent craftsmanship and materials. The presence of the maker’s label ensures that the set meets the highest production standards of its time.
The set is in very good vintage condition, with wear consistent with age and use. The leather on the chairs shows some patina, but remains structurally sound and comfortable. The rosewood frames have only minor surface marks, and the glass top of the table is free from major scratches or chips, maintaining its sleek and functional appearance.
