Kristian Solmer Vedel easy chairs

These rare easy chairs, model Modus, were designed by Kristian Solmer Vedel and produced by Søren Willadsen Møbelfabrik in Denmark in 1963. The Modus series reflects Vedel’s interest in modularity and ergonomic clarity, combining a restrained structural logic with a sculptural, human-centered seating form characteristic of Scandinavian modernism of the early 1960s.

The frames are executed in solid oak, shaped with softly rounded profiles and precise joinery. The construction is visually light yet structurally robust, with slightly tapered legs and a rectangular base that supports the suspended leather elements. The design allows the upholstery to function as both seat and backrest, tensioned between the wooden uprights and creating a relaxed, cradling sitting position. The arm supports are integrated into the same suspended leather system, reinforcing the continuous, enveloping form.

The chairs retain their original black leather upholstery, which has developed a natural patina consistent with age and use. The leather shows gentle creasing and surface wear, particularly in the seating areas, without tears or structural damage. The oak frames are in good vintage condition, with minor surface marks and a warm, even tone that highlights the grain. Overall, the chairs present as well-preserved examples with small signs of usage appropriate to their age.

The Modus chairs exemplify Vedel’s contribution to Danish mid-century furniture, balancing craftsmanship, material honesty, and functional comfort. Their compact proportions and distinctive construction make them suitable both as individual lounge chairs and as grouped seating in a modern interior.
