Kurt Østervig bar cabinet
This rare bar cabinet, designed by Danish furniture designer Kurt Østervig, was produced by K.P. Møbler in Denmark during the 1960s. It is a refined example of mid-century Scandinavian craftsmanship, showcasing the era’s focus on functionality, material richness, and understated elegance. Østervig, known for his attention to proportion and architectural structure, often integrated sculptural qualities into practical furniture pieces, and this cabinet is a quintessential example of that approach.
The cabinet is crafted from richly grained rosewood, a prized hardwood in mid-century Danish furniture production, valued for its deep color variations and complex natural patterns. The piece features a pair of tambour sliding doors with vertical ribbed detailing, a characteristic Østervig design element that gives the surface texture and visual rhythm. Inside, the cabinet is fitted with two adjustable glass shelves and a bottle storage section, revealing a contrasting interior in light birch veneer that enhances the depth and tonal warmth of the rosewood exterior. The elevated base with slender, tapered legs and integrated stretchers creates a light, floating appearance while ensuring stability and structural integrity.
The cabinet remains in excellent vintage condition with minor signs of use consistent with age. It represents the sophisticated balance of material quality, functional design, and aesthetic clarity that defined Danish furniture making in the mid-20th century.
