Kurt Østervig table
This is a rare rectangular coffee or side table designed by Kurt Østervig and produced by Jason Møbler in Denmark during the 1950s. The piece exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian modernism through its restrained form, warm material palette, and functional clarity. The tabletop is constructed in solid teak with expressive grain figuring and bookmatched veneer patterns, providing visual depth and natural contrast. The edges of the tabletop are finished with raised lip details at both short ends, a subtle gesture that frames the surface and adds a linear articulation to the overall design.
The tabletop rests on four slender cylindrical legs, made of lacquered steel with teak dowel feet. The contrast between the matte black of the upper leg segments and the warm wood tones of the feet echoes the juxtaposition of industrial and organic materials characteristic of the period. The leg structure provides a light and stable base without distracting from the timber’s presence above. The connection between top and legs is discreet, preserving the clean horizontal emphasis of the design.
Kurt Østervig was a Danish designer trained as a shipbuilder, which influenced his attention to structural logic and refined detailing. Active from the 1940s through the 1970s, Østervig worked with several Danish manufacturers and is known for his versatile, material-focused pieces that balance functionalism with expressive wood craftsmanship. This table, produced by Jason Møbler, is indicative of his mid-century work in its elegance, modest scale, and use of solid materials in pure geometric configurations.
The table remains in good vintage condition with minor surface wear consistent with age, including small marks on the top and gentle patination on the legs.
