Information

This rare Art Deco ceiling lamp was designed and produced by Lars Holmström in Arvika, Sweden, during the 1930s. The lamp exemplifies Holmström’s distinctive style, combining expressive decorative elements with refined craftsmanship and a rich material palette. It stands as a testament to early 20th-century Scandinavian decorative arts, in which traditional metalworking techniques were merged with emerging modernist influences.

The fixture features a round structure composed of patinated brass, suspended from a series of brass rods with circular loop joints. The circular frame is filled with a frosted glass diffuser that softens the light output and enhances its atmospheric character. The central frosted glass disc is overlaid with black-painted wrought iron scrollwork arranged in a symmetrical, radial pattern—an ornamental design that introduces dynamic movement and visual intricacy to the piece.

Around the perimeter, the lamp is adorned with sculpted brass floral motifs and decorative cups with chain detailing. Four large, upward-facing leaf forms in pressed brass are attached to the vertical supports, creating a crown-like architectural element above the diffuser. The central light source is housed in a mottled glass globe, delicately veined in earth tones, contributing a subtle organic detail that contrasts with the structural formality of the surrounding brasswork.

Lars Holmström (1877–1952) was an important Swedish metal artist and designer known for his artisanal lighting and ecclesiastical works. Operating from his workshop in Arvika, he was particularly active during the 1920s and 1930s. His work frequently incorporated forged iron, brass, and patinated metals, often in combination with etched or frosted glass. His pieces are marked by a signature balance between restrained elegance and ornamental richness, as reflected in this ceiling lamp.

This fixture is in good vintage condition, with visible signs of use and a well-developed patina across the brass elements. The greenish oxidation is consistent with untreated brass surfaces and contributes to the object’s historical authenticity and aged character.

The lamp measures 60 cm in diameter and 50 cm in height (approximately 23.6 x 19.7 inches). Its scale and detailing make it suitable for use as a decorative centerpiece in historic or eclectic interiors, where it can provide both ambient light and sculptural presence.
