Lars Holmström

Lars Holmström (1894–1959) was a Swedish architect and designer best known for his work in decorative metalwork and lighting during the early to mid-20th century. He is closely associated with the company Arvika Konsthantverk, which he founded in 1926, and through which he developed a distinctive body of hand-forged lighting fixtures and metal objects rooted in Swedish craft traditions. His work reflects influences from Swedish Grace as well as later functionalist ideals, combining ornament with structural clarity.

Biography

Lars Holmström was trained as an architect in Sweden and became active during the 1920s, a period marked by renewed interest in national craftsmanship and the applied arts. With the founding of Arvika Konsthantverk in Värmland, he established a workshop dedicated to producing high-quality artisanal metalwork, including chandeliers, candlesticks, and architectural fittings. The company quickly gained recognition for its skilled forging techniques and careful material handling.

Holmström’s designs often drew inspiration from historical and vernacular ironwork, particularly medieval and rural Scandinavian forms. At the same time, his work evolved alongside changing design trends, gradually incorporating simpler forms and more restrained ornamentation during the 1930s and 1940s. Many of his lighting fixtures were produced for churches, public buildings, and private homes, where durability and craftsmanship were essential.

Lars Holmström’s work represents an important contribution to Swedish decorative metalwork and lighting design.
