Lars Holmström candlestick
This rare candlestick was designed and produced by Lars Holmström in his own workshop in Arvika, Sweden, during the 1940s. Crafted from solid brass, the piece exemplifies Holmström’s distinctive style, which blends traditional metalworking techniques with geometric abstraction typical of early Scandinavian modernism.
The construction features a stepped, symmetrical horizontal armature supporting seven evenly spaced candle holders. Each holder consists of a cylindrical socket set on a shallow dish, mounted atop a brass sphere, creating a rhythmic sequence along the length of the piece. This upper assembly rests on a diagonal brass beam anchored by a central sphere, which itself sits on a concentric stepped circular base. The composition balances mass and visual elevation, conveying both stability and lightness.
The brass has developed a warm patina over time, with oxidation particularly visible inside the candle sockets. The stepped elements and spherical accents demonstrate fine craftsmanship, reflecting Holmström’s artisanal training and workshop production. The condition is consistent with age, showing minor surface wear and patina, while maintaining structural integrity and surface clarity.
Lars Holmström (1894–1983) was a renowned Swedish metalworker and designer known for his artisanal lighting and decorative metal objects. Operating his own workshop in Arvika, he produced limited quantities of handcrafted pieces in brass and iron, combining Swedish craft traditions with modernist design principles. His work is celebrated for its balance, purity of form, and architectural composition.
The candlestick measures 48.5 centimeters in width, 14.5 centimeters in depth, and 17.5 centimeters in height (approximately 19.1 by 5.7 by 6.9 inches).
