Lars Holmström candlestick
This brass candlestick was designed and produced by Lars Holmström in Arvika, Sweden, during the 1950s. It is composed of six candleholders arranged in a circular formation, supported by an undulating frame of bent brass rods that create an elegant rhythm of curves. The design balances lightness and structure, with each holder elevated on slender supports that rise from the looping base. The material has developed a warm, aged patina, adding depth and character to the surface.
Lars Holmström was an important figure in Swedish metalwork design, active mainly during the mid-20th century. His workshop in Arvika specialized in artisanal brass and wrought iron pieces, including chandeliers, candlesticks, and smaller decorative objects. Holmström’s works are characterized by craftsmanship and sculptural qualities, often merging traditional metalworking techniques with the forms of Scandinavian modernism. His designs were well regarded in both domestic and ecclesiastical settings, and many of his larger lighting works are still found in churches throughout Sweden.
The brass material reflects the Scandinavian tradition of working with metals in a way that emphasizes both utility and decorative refinement. In this candlestick, Holmström’s design reveals an interest in organic movement, as the looping supports suggest continuity and flow while maintaining structural balance. The combination of sculptural rhythm and practical functionality embodies the essence of mid-century Scandinavian design, where everyday objects were elevated to a refined artistic level.
The piece remains in good vintage condition with small signs of age and use, consistent with its time of production. Its dimensions are 19 cm in diameter and 10 cm in height (approximately 7.5 x 3.9 inches).
