Information

This rare brutalist coffee table was designed by Danish artist and ceramicist Lilly Just Lichtenberg and produced by Poul Cadovius in Denmark during the 1960s. The piece exemplifies the fusion of sculptural ceramic art with functional furniture design, embodying the brutalist aesthetic within Scandinavian mid-century production.

The round tabletop showcases a richly textured ceramic surface in earthy brown and olive green tones. The surface is divided into abstract, petal-like geometric fields separated by raised linear borders. Each field features densely patterned reliefs and glazed circular motifs—some arranged in radiating patterns, others clustered in organic, mandala-like formations. The matte ceramic matrix contrasts subtly with semi-gloss green glazes that highlight the circular elements, creating visual rhythm and depth. The ceramic top is mounted within a brushed metal frame, which adds structural clarity and modernist restraint to the design.

The base is constructed from multiple flat vertical steel bars arranged in a circular configuration, connected at top and bottom by ring-shaped metal elements. This architectural structure provides visual lightness while securely supporting the substantial ceramic top, enhancing the table’s formal balance.

Lilly Just Lichtenberg was an active ceramic artist in the 1950s and 1960s, known for expressive, abstract stoneware panels and architectural ceramics. Although less documented than her male contemporaries, her work is increasingly recognized for its material intensity and experimental approach to form and surface. This table, signed by Lichtenberg, stands as a rare example of her functional design work and aligns with the Scandinavian mid-century movement that blurred the lines between craft and furniture.

The table is in very good vintage condition, showing light wear to the metal and minor glaze variations typical of handmade ceramics from the period. The surface retains its original finish with no structural damage or repairs.

The dimensions are 126 cm in diameter and 49 cm in height, approximately 49.6 inches wide and 19.3 inches high.
