Lisa Johansson-Pape wall lamp
This rare adjustable wall lamp was designed by Lisa Johansson-Pape and produced by Stockmann Orno in Finland during the 1950s. Executed in brass, the lamp reflects Johansson-Pape’s refined approach to functional lighting, where careful control of light and material sensitivity are central to the design.
The construction consists of a wall-mounted brass arm with a horizontal extension that allows the shade to be positioned away from the wall. The arm is formed from gently bent tubular brass with articulated joints, giving the lamp a clear architectural line while allowing practical adjustability. The cord is suspended vertically in a twisted black textile sleeve, contributing a subtle graphic contrast to the warm brass tones. The shade is conical with softly rounded contours, tapering towards the suspension point, and features small perforations distributed across the surface.
The brass surface shows a rich, naturally developed patina with variations in tone ranging from warm golden hues to darker, oxidized areas. When illuminated, the perforations create a delicate pattern of light on surrounding surfaces, while the open lower edge of the shade directs a focused pool of light downward. This combination results in both functional task lighting and a pronounced atmospheric effect, characteristic of Johansson-Pape’s lighting philosophy.
Lisa Johansson-Pape was one of the most influential Finnish lighting designers of the mid-20th century and served as artistic director at Orno for several decades. Her work is closely associated with the principles of Nordic modernism, emphasizing glare-free illumination, restrained forms, and thoughtful material use. Stockmann Orno was among Finland’s leading lighting manufacturers and played a key role in shaping Finnish lighting design internationally during this period.
The lamp is in good vintage condition with visible signs of use and patina consistent with age. It has been newly rewired, making it suitable for contemporary use while retaining its original character.
The shade has a diameter of 26 cm and a height of 29 cm, corresponding to approximately 10.2 inches in diameter and 11.4 inches in height. The maximum extended length of the lamp is 110 cm, or about 43.3 inches.
