Mogens Koch bookcase
This modular storage system, designed by the celebrated Danish architect Mogens Koch and produced by the esteemed cabinetmaker Rud Rasmussen in Denmark, was first introduced in 1933. A quintessential example of mid-century Scandinavian modern design, this system has become renowned for its elegant simplicity and functional versatility. The modular nature of the design allows for various configurations, making it adaptable to a wide range of spaces and storage requirements.
Crafted from high-quality pine, the system features warm, natural wood tones with prominent grain patterns typical of this material. The open bookcases are made up of symmetrical, square compartments, which offer efficient organization and contribute to the system’s balanced, visually appealing look. These open modules are complemented by a closed cabinet unit, which features panelled doors and internal shelving for concealed storage. The dovetail joinery used in the cabinet highlights the high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail for which Rud Rasmussen is known.
In terms of condition, the system is in excellent vintage shape, showing only minimal signs of use that are consistent with its age. Despite these minor signs of wear, the structure remains sound, and the piece retains the aesthetic appeal and functionality envisioned by Mogens Koch when it was designed. This set serves as a fine example of the enduring quality and timeless appeal of Scandinavian modern furniture.
