Mogens Lysell cabinet
This rare cabinet, designed and produced by Danish cabinetmaker Mogens Lysell in the 1950s, exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and material sensibility characteristic of Scandinavian mid-century design. The cabinet is constructed from richly grained rosewood for the exterior, which presents a symmetrical and vertically oriented grain pattern that highlights the natural figuring of the wood. The cabinet stands on elegant, tapering legs that are seamlessly integrated into the body through carefully executed joinery.
The cabinet’s exterior features subtle brass detailing, notably the keyhole escutcheon and linear trim, which lend a refined accent to the dark, warm tone of the rosewood. Upon opening the cabinet, a visually striking contrast is revealed: the interior is crafted in a lighter maple wood, offset by dramatic macassar ebony veneer used for the drawer fronts, back panel, and inner sides of the doors. The macassar veneer is oriented in fan-like and vertical grain configurations, adding a graphic and luxurious dimension to the otherwise minimalist structure. The drawers are finished with sculptural solid brass pulls of a double-bar form, emphasizing the artisanal quality of the piece.
The condition is good for its vintage, with minor signs of age and use consistent with careful handling over time. It retains its structural integrity and original design components. This cabinet is both a functional storage solution and an example of highly skilled cabinetmaking, reflecting the Danish tradition of bespoke furniture production where designers like Lysell worked in close collaboration with master craftspeople.
