Niels Koefoed dining table
This rare gateleg dining table by Niels Kofoed, produced in his own Danish workshop during the 1960s, exemplifies the mid-century Scandinavian ideals of craftsmanship, material integrity, and functional design. Constructed entirely in solid rosewood, the table’s oval top showcases richly figured planks with natural variations highlighted by a warm satin oil finish.
When closed, it forms a compact rectangular cabinet with two semicircular drop leaves. These leaves extend on pivoting gatelegs reinforced by integrated stretchers and diagonal bracing, providing stability while also creating an elegant sculptural base. The legs and frame feature chamfered detailing and smooth transitions, demonstrating meticulous joinery and thoughtful engineering typical of Kofoed’s work.
The gateleg mechanism operates smoothly, reflecting the quality of construction and precision typical of Danish furniture making from this period. The table is in excellent vintage condition, with minor wear and surface patina consistent with age, and all hinges and supports function perfectly.
This table combines practicality with sculptural beauty, adapting gracefully from a space-saving console to a generous dining surface.
