Niels Kofoed dining chairs
This rare set of twelve dining chairs, model Lis, was designed by Niels Kofoed and produced by Kofoeds Møbelfabrik in Hornslet, Denmark, in 1961. The frames are crafted from solid rosewood, displaying a deep, rich grain that highlights the natural variations in the wood. The structure is characterized by its elegant, high ladder-back design with gently curved horizontal slats, creating both visual lightness and ergonomic support. The back legs extend seamlessly from the frame, tapering slightly to enhance the overall fluidity of the design. The seats have been reupholstered in Gabriel Savak plain fabric, originally designed by Tove Kindt-Larsen. The upholstery is a soft, neutral-toned textile that provides a subtle contrast to the dark wood while maintaining the refined aesthetic of the chairs. The seat cushions are slightly padded for comfort, and the upholstery is neatly tailored to maintain the clean lines of the design.
Niels Kofoed was a Danish furniture designer known for his sophisticated and sculptural chair designs, often featuring finely crafted wooden frames with a strong focus on both aesthetics and functionality. Kofoeds Møbelfabrik, the manufacturer, was renowned for producing high-quality dining chairs that became widely appreciated in the mid-century Scandinavian design movement. The chairs remain in excellent condition, with the rosewood frames carefully preserved and the upholstery newly restored. The wood surface retains its original finish, exhibiting minor signs of wear consistent with age.
