Niels O. Møller armchair

This is the rare armchair model 62, designed by Danish cabinetmaker Niels Otto Møller and produced by J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. The chair is constructed from solid rosewood, showcasing the sculptural and organic qualities that define Møller’s work. The wood displays a deep reddish-brown coloration with rich, expressive grain patterns, particularly prominent along the arms and backrest slats.

The chair features a three-slat backrest with each rail slightly curved and organically integrated into the vertical uprights, creating a light yet structurally cohesive form. The arms sweep upward and outward in a continuous gesture, tapering smoothly into the front legs. The seat is made from original dark brown leather, stretched tightly and formed over a curved frame. The leather shows visible patina and light creasing, consistent with age and authentic use, while retaining its strength and original character.

Niels Otto Møller was a master of Danish modern woodworking, known for his precision joinery and sculptural clarity. His designs are characterized by hand-finished frames, free of visible joints, and a seamless visual flow between components. Model 62 is one of his more expressive armchair designs, notable for its refined proportions and the dynamic curvature of its elements.

J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik, founded in 1944 by Møller himself, was responsible for producing all of his furniture designs. The company maintained a small-scale, artisan approach, using traditional joinery and premium hardwoods, which ensured consistently high standards of craftsmanship. This model exemplifies the ideals of Danish modernism: simplicity, honesty of materials, and functionality expressed through elegance of form.

The dimensions are 55 cm in width, 50 cm in depth, and 80 cm in height, with a seat height of 44 cm. These correspond approximately to 21.7 inches wide, 19.7 inches deep, and 31.5 inches high, with a seat height of 17.3 inches.
